“People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us.”
I started photographing flowers during a transitional and very introspective period of my life. I’d go out in the morning and inspect my garden, see how each plant and its flowers were doing, and notice their details. Their beauty and interestingness—color, form, texture, patterns—called me out of my head and into another world. One day I brought the camera.
Photographing flowers challenges me to capture and communicate a fleeting vision of beauty; to share a moment of awe. I’ve communicated successfully if the image calls for more than a cursory glance.
I do take pictures of other things but I find flowers to be endlessly compelling subjects.
